The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) is a large collection of scientific journals from the 1400s to the present day. Scientific illustrations and photographic plates from the BHL can be used to illustrate species pages on Wikipedia.

Images from journals published in the United States before 1923 should be in the public domain; for journals published outside the United States, use the tables at Help:Public domain to determine their copyright status. Please note that not all BHL images are in the public domain; images published after 1923 have been made available by BHL under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license, which cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons unless an additional license can apply, for example being out of copyright in the country of publication due to age, or a specific release by the originating institution has been made. Please check BHL's licensing and copyright information, and ensure that you use the right copyright tags when uploading BHL images to the Commons.

You can help by adding this tag to images in the Commons which are on the BHL. Please leave any question at Commons talk:Biodiversity Heritage Library.

See Commons:Biodiversity Heritage Library/Reports for progress reports and quick suggestions for images to reuse or improve.
