Deutsch: Schriftschnitt - beim Metallsatz eine bestimmte Größe, Stärke und Stil einer Schriftart. Eine Schriftart (engl. Typeface or font family) besteht aus einer Reihe solcher Schriftschnitte, die ein gemeinsames Gesamtdesign haben. Im Englischen stammt das Wort font (ältere Schreibweise fount) von to found („gießen“) ab (also etwa in der Bedeutung von „(Schrift-)Guss“) und steht dort im traditionellen Buchdruck für den kompletten Satz eines Schriftschnittes von bestimmter Schriftgröße (Kegel), Gesamtgewicht und Zusammensetzung.[1][2]
Mit der Verbreitung von Computern kam es im Englischen zu einer Bedeutungsverschiebung: Die unterschiedlichen Schriftschnitte (fonts, z.B. Helvetica bold, Helvetica italic,...) einer Schriftart (typeface, z.B. Helvetica) wurden in einzelnen font-Dateien abgespeichert, weshalb das Wort font bald synonym für typeface verwendet wurde und inzwischen auch in Übersetzern wie Google Translate das Wort font mit „Schriftart“ übersetzt wird.
English: In metal typesetting, a font is a particular size, weight and style of a typeface (also called font family). A typeface consists of a range of such fonts that shared an overall design. A font (brit.: fount) is the whole number of letters that are cast of the same typeface and body.[1]
In modern usage, with the advent of computer fonts, the term "font" (computer font) has come to be used as a synonym for "typeface", although a typical typeface consists of a number of fonts. In modern digital typography the term stands for the file of a digitized typeface.
