The Forward Building at 173-175 East Broadway between Essex and Jefferson Streets in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City was built in 1912 and was designed by George A. Boehm in the Classical Revival style to be the headquarters of the Jewish Daily Forward, the "most significant Yiddish-language paper in the United States". (Guide to NYC Landmarks) The building's ornamentation represents the paper's socialist politics and include flaming torches, as well as relief portraits of socialist leaders such as Marx and Engels. The building was converted to apartments in 1999 by Alfred Wen. (Sources: Guide to NYC Landmarks (4th ed.) and AIA Guide to NYC (5th ed.))
