The Four occupations or Four classes (Chinese 四民, Japanese 士農工商) was an occupation classification used starting in ancient China by Confucian and Legalist scholars. The classes are

  • scholars and officials
  • farmers
  • artisans and craftsmen
  • merchants, traders, and peddlers
