English: Monsignor Georges Henri Joseph Édouard Lemaître ( 17 July 1894 – 20 June 1966) was a Belgian priest, astronomer and professor of physics at the Catholic University of Leuven. He was the first person to propose the theory of the expansion of the Universe, widely misattributed to Edwin Hubble. He was also the first to derive what is now known as the Hubble's law and made the first estimation of what is now called the Hubble constant which he published in 1927, two years before Hubble's article.

Nederlands: Georges Henri Joseph Edouard Lemaître ( Charleroi, 17 juli 1894 – Leuven, 20 juni 1966) was een Belgische katholieke priester, astronoom, kosmoloog, wiskundige en natuurkundige. Zijn belangrijkste wetenschappelijke bijdragen leverde hij aan de algemene relativiteitstheorie en aan de kosmologie door zijn hypothese van het uitdijende heelal (1927) en als grondlegger van de oerknaltheorie (1931). Lemaître was professor aan de universiteit van Leuven, titulair kanunnik en lid en voorzitter van 1960 tot aan zijn dood van de Pauselijke Academie voor de Wetenschappen.
