English: Between 1991 and 1992, Georgian government forces and ethnic Georgian militias fought against South Ossetian secessionists and North Ossetian volunteers, with sporadic support of Ossetia by the Soviet/Russian military units. The war ended through a Russian-brokered ceasefire that established a joint peacekeeping force and left South Ossetia divided between the rival authorities. In 2008, the conflict erupted again into the 2008 South Ossetia War.
