Giovanni Mochi, also known as Juan Mochi, (Florence, 1831 – Santiago de Chile, 1892). He began his studies in Florence, where he gained some notoriety, and later moved to Rome, where he met the Chilean Ángel Custodio Gallo, who brought one of his works to Chile. In 1871, Mochi moved to Paris, where he was a regular exhibitor at the Salons. In 1876, the Chilean government appointed him to succeed Kirchbach as director of the Academy of Painting. He was the third Director of the Academy and, although he did not leave behind a body of work of great merit, he succeeded in awakening interest in art and inspiring vocations among emerging painters. His war scenes, especially those depicting the War of the Pacific, are particularly well known. He died in Santiago de Chile.
