Deutsch: Ein Gletscher (in der Schweiz Firn, in Süddeutschland und Tirol auch Ferner, in Österreich landschaftlich auch Kees) ist eine aus Schnee hervorgegangene Eismasse mit einem klar definierten Einzugsgebiet, die sich aufgrund von Hangneigung, Struktur des Eises, Temperatur und der aus der Masse des Eises und den anderen Faktoren hervorgehenden Schubspannung eigenständig bewegt.
English: A Glacier A glacier (US /ˈɡleɪʃər/ or UK /ˈɡlæsiə/) is a persistent body of dense ice that is constantly moving under its own weight; it forms where the accumulation of snow exceeds its ablation (melting and sublimation) over many years, often centuries. Glaciers slowly deform and flow due to stresses induced by their weight, creating crevasses, seracs, and other distinguishing features. They also abrade rock and debris from their substrate to create landforms such as cirques and moraines. Glaciers form only on land and are distinct from the much thinner sea ice and lake ice that form on the surface of bodies of water.
Español: Un glaciar es una gruesa masa de hielo que se origina en la superficie terrestre por acumulación, compactación y recristalización de la nieve, mostrando evidencias de flujo en el pasado o en la actualidad. Su existencia es posible cuando la precipitación anual de nieve supera la evaporada en verano, por lo cual la mayoría se encuentra en zonas cercanas a los polos, aunque existen en otras zonas, en montañas.
Français : Un Glaciers est une masse de glace plus ou moins étendue qui se forme par le tassement de couches de neige accumulées. Écrasée sous son propre poids, la neige expulse l'air qu'elle contient, se soude en une masse compacte et se transforme en glace. Le domaine de plasticité de la glace étant particulièrement étendu, un glacier s'écoule lentement sous l'effet de la gravité le long d'une pente ou par fluage.
Íslenska: Jökull er massi íss sem ekki nær að bráðna milli árstíða. Jöklar eru stærstu forðabúr jarðarinnar af ferskvatni. Þótt jökulís sé fast og hart efni við fyrstu sýn verður hann í raun seigfljótandi þegar hann nær ákveðinni þykkt og magni og tekur að skríða undan halla líkt og þykkur grautur. Þannig síga jökultungur í hægfara straumi niður fjallshlíðar eða út frá stórum jökulhvelum og mynda skriðjökla.
