English: The Grumman F-9 Cougar was designated F9F with the U.S. Navy (and with it U.S. Marine Corps) until 18 September 1962 when, with the introduction of the Tri-Service aircraft designation system, all Cougars still in service were redesignated F-9. The Cougar shared its designation with the straight-wing Grumman F9F Panther. F9F-1 to F9F-5 were Panthers, F9F-6 to F9F-8 were Cougars.
