English: A hermit is a person who lives to some greater or lesser degree in seclusion and/or isolation from society.

This is in contrast to monks and nuns, who live in communities; however, monks in some orders may chose to live an ermetic life within a monastery, and some hermits (such as Saint Anthony the Great) attracted so many followers as to end their isolation.
