From Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository

A collection of images taken from three photograph albums depicting the Canadian Expeditionary Force in England, Belgium and France during the First World War. These images are from the Canadian Expeditionary Force photograph albums (C 224-8) housed at the Archives of Ontario. The photographs were taken by Canadian War Records Office (CWRO) photographers Captain Harry Knobel (from April-August 1916); Captain William Ivor Castle (from August 1916-June 1917); and Lieutenant William Rider-Rider (from June 1917-November 1918).

Images depict battle scenes, life in the trenches, political and military leaders, weapons manufacturing, devastation, parades and royal family members. They were taken at Vimy Ridge, the Somme, Ypres and other nearby locations. Other photos were taken in London.

The Archives of Ontario has uploaded these images in the hopes that they will provide teachers and students with primary source material for understanding the First World War experience through the activities of Canadian troops overseas.
