English: Kanamozikai (カナモジカイ Kanamojikai) is a Japanese foundation aiming for Japanese language reform. A Japanese businessman Yoshitaro Yamashita (山下芳太郎 Yamashita Yoshitarō) founded it in 1920. Their objective is to simplify Japanese script through abandonment of kanji (Chinese characters) and exclusive use of katakana (a Japanese phonetic alphabet). Simplified kana spelling and left-to-right horizontal writing were also part of their opinions, and both are now officially recognized and widely practiced.
