Luigi “Gigi” Riva (born 1944 in Leggiuno, province of Varese) is a former Italian footballer who played as striker; he is the Italy national football team’s top-goalscorer of all-time, with 35 goals in 42 matches; he also won the 1968 UEFA European Championship. Left-handed, because of his powerful shot with his left foot was nicknamed Rombo di Tuono (Roar of Thunder). After his retirement he was for a short period (1986-87) president of his former team, Cagliari Calcio; from 1990 to 2013 he was team manager of Italy's national association football team.
