  • English: Category for lightly salted herring that is eaten raw, usually only with chopped raw onion and sometimes with bread. This dish of the Netherlands is traditional specialities guaranteed (TSG) and is protected by EU. Don't confuse it with soused herring which is soaked in marinade.
  • Nederlands: Maatjesharing is licht gezouten haring die rauw wordt gegeten, meestal enkel met gesnipperde rauwe ui en soms met brood. De benaming Hollandse nieuwe geldt alleen tussen 1 mei en 31 augustus, de rest van het jaar wordt de term maatjesharing gebruikt.
