English: Cinema of Kerala or Malayalam cinema refers to films made in the Indian state of Kerala in Malayalam language. Malayalam movies typically portray social or familial issues and as a result are considered more realistic and highbrow than Bollywood movies. Despite budget contrains due to limited market, Malayalam cinema could pioneer various technical, thematic and production aspects of films in India or South India. The first cinema hall in Kerala was opened in Trichur (Thrissur) by K.W. Joseph in 1907 and it had a manually operated film projector. The first Malayalam film, a silent movie, titled Vigathakumaran, was released in 1928. Balan, released in 1938, was the first "en:talkie" in Malayalam language.
