The mammy archetype stems from the typical dress of African American nursemaids in the 19th century, as portrayed in this historic photograph.
English: The Mammy is a stereotypical caricature of an African American maid or nursemaid, now considered highly offensive. Typically the images will show a heavyset African American woman, with a head scarf, and the exaggerated facial characteristics typical of caricatures of African Americans in US history. The images were generally seen at the time of their creation by White Americans as harmless.
