English: The Matres and Matrones were goddesses venerated in the Western provinces of the Roman Empire, including the provinces of Gallia, Germania, Britannia, and the Celtiberian parts of Hispania. They are recorded in inscriptions as the Matronae, Matres and Matrones, sometimes with or under the epithet Campestres, "of the fields'", referring to the military parade ground or the field of battle. They are represented often in groups of three or four in statues and reliefs

Deutsch: Matronen, Matronae, Matres, Matrae, Dea Matrona oder Deae Matres sind Bezeichnungen einer römischen, germanischen und keltischen Muttergottheit, für die auf römischem Kolonisationsgebiet in Westeuropa über 800 Votivsteine und Altäre errichtet wurden. Die älteste gefundene Inschrift datiert zwischen 70 und 89 n. Chr., die letzte ins Jahr 240. Matronensteine wurden gestiftet, um Schutz für die Familie zu erbitten, Fruchtbarkeit oder beruflichen Erfolg, oder als Dank für die Errettung von einer Gefahr oder Krankheit. Die Darstellung auf den Weihsteinen präsentieren die Matronen fast ausschließlich als Dreiheit (Trinität), es sind 70 Beinamen bekannt, die in unterschiedlicher Häufung vorkommen. Es wurden auch ganze Tempelanlagen des Matronenkults ausgegraben.

Italiano: Nella mitologia celtica la Dea Matrona ("Dea Madre") era la dea tutelare del fiume Marna in Gallia. In molte aree era adorata come una dea triplice, nota come "Deae Matres" o "Deae Matronae" ("Dee Madri"). Il culto di questa triade divina è ben attestata nel nord Europa (Matres o Matrones), non solo nelle aree celtiche, ed era simile ad altre figure (Fates, Furiae, Norne ecc.).
