A group of reliefs from a Roman monument of the 1st century A.D. commemorating the battle of Actium in 31 B.C. and the triumph of Octavian in 29 B.C. The reliefs were acquired in Italy in the 16th century by Per Afán de Ribera, the first Duke of Alcala and Viceroy of Naples, who shipped them to Spain to adorn his palace, the Casa de Pilatos in Seville. After passing into the hands of the Dukes of Medinaceli in the 17th century they were moved to Madrid, where they were displayed in the Medinaceli family palaces until 1965, when the collection was broken up. Most of the panels, including those that depict the naval battle at Actium, are now in the collection of the Dukes of Cardona in Cordoba. Two panels with parts of the triumphal procession have been returned to the Casa de Pilatos in Seville; and one panel from the procession, as well as two small fragments from another panel, probably from the battle frieze, are in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest.
