Category:Mercer Island, Washington
Appearance
- Mercer Island — the city and island in Lake Washington, east of Seattle.
- Located in King County, in the state of Washington.
English: Mercer Island was never part of the incorporated City of Seattle, but older photographs, maps, directories, and archival captions sometimes use “Seattle” loosely as the regional or postal identification, which can make it appear otherwise. The island is physically separated from Seattle by the main body of Lake Washington. Its governmental history developed independently. The community of Mercer Island incorporated in 1960, initially encompassing the northern portion of the island. A separate Town of Mercer Island incorporated in 1970 in the southern portion; the two municipalities merged in 1970, producing essentially the present City of Mercer Island. The island itself was once commonly called East Seattle, especially around the settlement on the northwest side of Mercer Island. But East Seattle was a community/place name on Mercer Island, not an indication that the island constituted the eastern portion of the City of Seattle.
