English: Syracuse is a city with a strong and important military history. In the past it was a famous military fortress (from the time of emperor Charles V of Habsburg until the Unification of Italy), completely surrounded by walls. Its harbour was protected by military ships of the European powers and served as a supply point for the warring fleets. Up to the last century (20th century) Syracuse has been the site of significant war events.
