English: Courtyards, in Arabic sehans — are within almost every mosque in Islamic architecture.
  • Mosque courtyards are open to the sky and surrounded on all sides by structures with halls and rooms, and often a shaded semi-open arcade.
  • A mosque sehan—courtyard is used for performing ablutions. Sehans usually feature a centrally positioned Şadirvan (fountain—pool) under an open pavilion called a howz.
