This circular island was built to allow emergency stoppage of water should the railway tunnel (New Street Tunnel) which runs very close beneath the Farmer's Bridge part of the junction be breached.

The junction here was originaly called Old Turn Junction and Deep Cutting Junction. It has recently also been called Farmer's Bridge Junction, although this was originally near to the top lock of Farmer's Bridge locks. The original Birmingham and Fazeley Canal began at that top lock. The stretch of water between here and the top lock was part of the Newhall Branch of the Main Line.
