Ophelia: The daughter of royal counsellor Polonius in William Shakespeare's Tragedy Hamlet. Ophelia and Hamlet are in love, but the girl is warned to stay away from the prince by her father and brother Laertes, and Hamlet eventually turns against her. After he has subsequently killed her eavesdropping father and is sent away to England, Ophelia's grief causes her to turn mad. Finally she drowns in a brook near Elsinore castle.
