English: Phiale (Greek; plural phialai) and patera (Latin; plural paterae) are used in modern scholarship as synonyms for a round, shallow vessel without handles, used primarily for libations. Many examples have an "omphalos," a central indentation in the bottom that provides a finger-hold and creates a knob on the inner surface, often ornamented. The term patera is also used for a shallow dish with a single long decorative handle, a shape particularly common in Magna Graecia and other parts of Italy.
