Information about the animal

The western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) is a subspecies of gorilla and one of the two gorilla subspecies found in Africa. They are native to the dense rainforests of central and western Africa, including the countries of Cameroon, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. With an impressive weight of up to 200 kilograms and a stocky stature, they are the largest living primates. Male gorillas have a distinctive silver colouration on their backs, which has earned them the name "silverback". This gorilla subspecies is known for its social structure, which is characterised by a dominant male silverback leadership. A group, also known as a harem, usually consists of one silverback, several females and their offspring. These social units are highly interconnected and communicate through a variety of sounds and postures. Western lowland gorillas are herbivores and feed mainly on fruits, leaves, seeds, stems and bark. They spend most of their time foraging and can consume large amounts of plant material to meet their energy needs. Gorillas are highly endangered, mainly due to poaching and habitat loss. Protecting these remarkable primates and their habitats is crucial to ensure their survival..
