The griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) is a large species of bird of prey found in much of Europe, North Africa and Asia. Griffon vultures are distinguished by their characteristic feathered face and bare neck. They have dark plumage with a prominent white patch at the base of the wings. These vultures are scavengers and play an important role as a cleaning crew in nature by disposing of carcasses. With their impressive wingspan, they can travel long distances in search of food. Griffon vultures are highly endangered, mainly due to habitat loss and poisoning from the use of certain pesticides. Conservation programmes and protection measures are of great importance to ensure the continued existence of these fascinating birds. |
