Information about the animal

Meerkats (Suricata suricatta) are small mammals native to the arid regions of southern Africa. They are known for their characteristic appearance with slender bodies, upright postures and curious facial expressions. These sociable animals live in groups called colonies. In the colony, they perform various tasks to ensure the survival of the group. Some meerkats keep watch and warn the others of potential dangers, while others forage for food or take care of the offspring. Meerkats are diurnal and spend most of the day foraging. They feed mainly on insects, such as beetles, spiders and scorpions, and occasionally on smaller vertebrates. Their excellent eyesight and good hearing help them detect predators while living in their underground burrows. These burrows have complex systems of tunnels and chambers that provide them with shelter and protection. Meerkats are known for their social interaction and playful behaviour. They communicate with each other through vocalisations, body postures and touch. Their playful nature and acrobatic skills make them popular animals in many zoos and animal parks.
