English: polar aurora (plural: auroras or aurorae), also called “northern lights”, “aurora borealis” (in the Northern Hemisphere), or “southern lights”, “aurora australis” (in the Southern Hemisphere): a natural phenomenon (most often visible on Earth in polar regions during winter), producing colored veils of light in the nightly sky, caused by the ionization of upper layers of the atmosphere of a planet, by charged particles from the stellar wind not reflected by the planetary magnetic field (also sometimes caused in atmospheric currents of giant planets by the magnetosphere of their moons, as well as in the tenuous atmosphere of some moons).
Français : aurore polaire, également appelée « aurore boréale » (dans l’hémisphère nord) ou bien « aurore australe » (dans l’hémisphère sud) : phénomène naturel (visible le plus souvent sur Terre dans les régions polaires en hiver), donnant des voiles lumineux colorés dans le ciel nocturne, causé par l’ionisation des couches hautes de l’atmosphère d’une planète, par les particules chargées du vent stellaire non réfléchies par le champ magnétique planétaire (parfois causé également dans les courants atmosphériques de planètes géantes par la magnétosphère de leurs lunes, ainsi que dans l'atmosphère ténue de certaines lunes).
