The Punjab region (Punjabi: ਪੰਜਾਬ, پنجاب), also spelled Panjab, "five waters", is populated by Punjabi speaking Punjabi people and was divided in 1947, as result of the Partition of India. As of today, it forms the present Indian state of Punjab and province of Punjab in Pakistan. The Punjab region has been host to some of the oldest civilizations in the world including one of the world's first and oldest civilizations, the Indus Valley Civilization. The cultural region is straddling the border between Punjab (Pakistan) and Punjab (India). The so-called "five waters" are the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and the Beas rivers.
