English: Rabaul (formerly Simpson Harbour) is a township in East New Britain province, Papua New Guinea. The town was the provincial capital and most important settlement in the province until it was destroyed in 1994 by falling ash of a volcanic eruption. Rabaul was the headquarters of German New Guinea until captured by the British Empire during World War I, when it became the capital of the Australian mandated Territory of New Guinea until 1937. During World War II it was captured by the Japanese in 1942, and it became the main base of Japanese military and naval activity in the South Pacific.

Deutsch: Rabaul (ehemals Simpsonhafen) ist eine Stadt auf der Gazelle-Halbinsel in Papua-Neuguinea mit 3.885 Einwohnern (2000). Sie liegt am nördlichsten Punkt der Insel Neubritannien an der Seestraße Saint George’s Channel. Rabaul war ab 1910 Sitz des Gouverneurs von Deutsch-Neuguinea und spielte eine wichtige Rolle im Pazifikkrieg während des Zweiten Weltkriegs bei den Kämpfen zwischen Japan und den USA. Die Stadt wurde 1937 und 1994 durch Ausbrüche des Tavurvur-Vulkans unter Asche begraben und zerstört.
