Category:Radium Gilbert (ship, 1946)
|Information about the vessel may be found at IMO 5288891.
A ship can change name and flag state through time, but the IMO number remains the same through the hull's entire lifetime. As a result, it can be useful to identify a ship by using the IMO number.
The Radium Gilbert was built in Vancouver, in 1946, then shipped, in pieces, by flatcar, to the Mackenzie River system, where she was re-assembled. She carried highly radioactive Uranium ore, and, unknown to her crew, became radioactive herself -- particularly the crews' shower. She ran aground off Deline, in 1980, in site of surviving families of those who died of the after-effects of inadequate radiation safety precautions, until she was demolished, in 2005.
