English: A Rajput (from Sanskrit raja-putra, "son of a king") also known as Thakur or Rajputra is a Kshatriya warrior caste group from the Indian subcontinent known for their bravery, fearlessness, valour and a great feeling of lineage pride. The Rajputs defended India from Islamic invasions for a long period of time. The four agnivanshi Rajput clans, namely the Pratiharas (Pariharas), Solankis (Chaulukyas), Paramaras (Parmars), and Chauhans (Chahamanas) are regarded to have rose to prominence first. Other than these, there are also a large number of other clans which fall under Chandravanshi and Suryavanshi Rajput lineages. Rajputs ruled more than four hundred of the estimated six hundred princely states at the time of India's independence in 1947.
