Russian iron boiler jacketing was a method of hammering graphite powders into the surface of 'Russian iron' sheets to prevent rusting. This resulted in a shimmering blue, sometimes grey, luster that accented the polished brass fittings and extensive hand panting. Americans adapted the method for the boilers of their steam locomotives.NYCS
