English: Shtetls (Yiddish: "towns/villages") were small rural towns and villages in Central and Eastern Europe, from Medieval times to their destruction in the Holocaust, with high Jewish proportions of their populations. Their Jewish life epitomised a complete distinctive culture and spiritual community.
