English: The Sig Rune or Siegrune, originally named Sowilo, meaning 'sun' in Proto-Germanic, is an s-rune (ᛊ, ᛋ) derived from Old Italic and Greek sigma. Historically symbolizing the sun, it appears in ancient inscriptions and rune poems. Guido von List reinterpreted it as the 'Siegrune',linking it to 'victory' (German: Sieg). In 1933, Walter Heck adapted the Siegrune into the emblem of the SS, the elite corps of the Nazi Party, featuring two sig runes side by side like lightning bolts.
