English: A spotting scope is a small, portable optical magnification device (refracting telescope) for enlarged viewing of distant objects. As a strong difference to the otherwise quite similar binoculars, it has only one entry lens and thus can be used only with one eye, while the other eye stays closed during use. The magnification factor is typically significantly larger than that of binoculars, and since some decades devices with adjustable magnification (zoom) have become popular. They are, for example, often used in amateur and professional animal watching and have various military applications. Due to the strong magnification, the image tends to shake when handheld, thus it is common to use a tripod.
Deutsch: Ein Spektiv ist ein tragbares und handliches optisches Vergrößerungsgerät (Refraktionsfernrohr) zur vergrößerten Betrachtung entfernter Objekte. Als starker Unterschied zu den sonst recht ähnlichen Ferngläsern hat es nur eine Eintrittslinse und kann somit nur mit einem Auge verwendet werden, während das andere Auge während des Gebrauchs geschlossen bleibt. Der Vergrößerungsfaktor ist typischerweise deutlich größer als der von Ferngläsern, seit einigen Jahrzehnten sind auch Geräte mit einstellbarer Vergrößerung (Zoom) verbreitet. Sie werden unter anderem in der professionellen Tierbeobachtung und beim Militär eingesetzt. Wegen der starken Vergrößerung neigt das Bild zum Zittern wenn das Gerät mit den Händen gehalten wird, daher ist der Gebrauch von Stativen verbreitet.
