The term suffragette was coined by the Daily Mail in 1906 to describe members of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the UK, who were fighting for women's suffrage (the right to vote in elections) under the banner "deeds not words". The WSPU embraced the term suffragette and made it their own.
