Sultan Ahmed Mirza, a paternal uncle of Babur and Timurid ruler of Samarkand and Bukhara from 1469 until 1494. He died while returning from his 1493-1494 Ferghana expedition against Babur, the twelve-year-old son and successor of Umar Shaikh Mirza II, his brother.

  • "Sultan Ahmad Mirza decided to invade Farghana in 1494 and advanced wi th Mahmud Khan from Samarqand to occupy Andijan. The latter marched to siege Akshi, Umar Shaikh’s capital and the largest town of Farghana. Umar Shaikh set out to defend his capital and was killed in an accident ( 8 June 1494). Babur’s position was very insecure when he succeeded his father at the age of eleven years and six months only (born 14 February 1483). Babur then the Governor of Andijan, wanted to organize defense from the fort but Amir Shirim Taghai advised him to retire a safe place (Ush). But Khwaja Maulana Qazi and others opposed this idea and advised Babur to enter the fort and prepare himself for defense. However, Babur realized that he could not resist against Sultan Ahmad Mirza, and became his vassal and was allowed to retain Farghana (...) Meantime, Sultan Ahmad Mirza advanced and took Auratipa, Khujand, and Marghinan, and came on to Qaba, near Andijan. He refused to accept Babur’s proposal of handing over Andijan to him. But Sultan Ahmad repented soon this expedition of him and turned back with nothing done." in The Illustrated Baburnama, Som Prakash Verma, Routledge, 2016, p.48-51
