English: Compound steam engines where the high and low pressure cylinders are arranged in tandem on the same piston rod.
Note that the pistons may be either in tandem (one behind the other) or alongside (as per the Burrell single crank). The crucial factor is that they are parallel and driven from the same crankpin, so that they operate in phase.
