Appearance
A town near and around a major rocky hillock close to and southwest of Madurai city, the monuments found at Thirupparankundram are also named after the local name for the rocky hill to its northeast – Skandamalai. This massive rock is the home of a major Murugan temple built around an early Pandya era cave temple, other early Hindu and Jain cave monuments on other sides of the rock, as well as an Islamic Dargah monument of Sikandar Shah, the last Sultan of Madurai Sultanate.
