From 1910 to 1977, the (nearly) current corridor of U.S. Route 40 in Utah was designated by the Utah State Legislature as Utah State Route 6. In 1977, State Route 6 designation was applied to U.S. Route 6 and U.S. Route 40 was designated at State Route 40.

From 1910 to 1962, the former routing of U.S. Route 40 in Utah (which at the time extended west to Nevada and roughly followed the current route of Interstate 80 west from Kimball Junction) was officially designated as State Route 2 by the Utah State Legislature. In 1962, the State Route 2 designation was applied to Interstate 80.
