Special control (byte order mark)
U+FEFF (with neutral directionality) may be used at start of some encoded texts as an ignorable “byte order mark” (BOM) to detect its encoding (by contrast with the non-character code point U+FFFE, normally not valid in many standards for interoperable interchange of encoded texts across systems).
The legacy use as “zero-width space” (ZWSP) for indicating non-breaking is deprecated, see “word joiner” (WJ) U+2060 instead.
Glyph part
Arabic tail fragment, for compatibility with certain legacy character sets. These are used along with glyphs for the large initial or medial forms of some Arabic letters, on legacy terminals that only represent only the rightmost half part of these letters in fixed half-width cells. This character is considered to be ignorable for plain-text searches as the textual semantics is carried by the contextual form of the Arabic letter encoded before it (possibly with an intermediate joining Arabic shadda).
The shaping and joining behavior and presentation form for all other characters in the following sections is independent of their context of use. These are not compatibility characters, but they have compatibility decomposition mappings to sequences of a space or shadda followed by an Arabic diacritic or letter, without canonical equivalence, essentially for collation purposes. Preferred characters with context-sensitive shaping and joining are found in the Arabic block.
