The University of Ghana is arisen from the University College of the Gold Coast which was founded in 1948 as affiliate college of the then University of London. With the attainment of the independency of the former British colony Gold Coast on the 6th of March 1957, the name of the institution was changed to University College of Ghana. However, firstly in the year 1961, this establishment obtained the status of a university and is called since then University of Ghana. In the year 2010 were matriculated 29.754 students at this university. The main campus of the university is located in Legon East, a suburb of Accra.
