  • To identify the ~2200 pieces of art by van Gogh which ever were cataloguized, there are two generally accepted catalogue raisonnés:
Jacob Baart de la Faille (IDs beginning with F_) who did the first one in the 1920ies, and the late 1960ies Jan Hulsker (IDs beginning with JH_) which is more chronologically. Neither is 100% complete, and this is why literature often quotes both, but De la Faille first.
  • To refer to letters, it is common practice that sheer numbers within brackets, like (488) refer to a letter which Vincent wrote to his brother Theo, whilst other letters are marked by an addidtional character. B2, for instance, refers to Vincent's letter_2 to his friend Émile Bernard, R means letters to Dutch painter van Rappard, W to his sister Willemien. Those letters are a major source for research on van Gogh's vita and oeuvre, and are to be considered to be part of his oeuvre.
  • The authoritative online source for lookup is vggallery by David Brooks, Toronto, Canada, which is endorsed by the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, the major collection.
  • An interesting compendium, focussing on the interrelationship between van Gogh's draftsmanship and paintings, considering his complete oeuvre, was edited due to the 2008 van Gogh exhibition in Vienna's Albertina, the second largest ever (after Van Gogh Museum's centennial exhibition in 1990). The 450-page book on 140 exposed items, and at least 150 more paintings and drawings (because quite many of the items desirable for the exhibition were not lent by their owners) was co-edited by the heads of Albertina (Klaus Albrecht Schröder, Heinz Widauer), Van Gogh Museum (Sjaar van Heugten, Marije Vellekoop), with articles by Teio Meedendorp (Kröller-Müller Museum) and others. It publishes research data on the Van Gogh Museum's items which otherwise would not be published before 2009:
Heartfelt Lines, ISBN 978-3-8321-9133-7 (and ISBN 978-3-8321-9158-0 museum edition.)
Gezeichnete Bilder, ISBN 978-3-8321-9125-2 (and 978-3-8321-9157-3 museum edition, sold out).
  • In case you upload new files, please...
  1. Have a look whether a file of the same work already exists. Please add cross-links under the "other_versions" section between the existing file and the newly uploaded file. (See COMMONS:OVERWRITE)
  2. Please use {{Artwork}} for the file description, and fill out as carefully as possible. Every known Van Gogh piece has an identity number, either F or JH (see above), and sources which can be taken seriously give at least one of them.
  3. Please categorize according the work period (see above), to allow overlooking the content of this huge paternal category (one day in the far future).
  4. If in doubt, paste {{VG doubt|Reason or question ~~~~}} at the top of the description page, to categorize your upload as Category:Van Gogh files kept in doubt in order to notify more expert users who might identify the piece.
