The Warangal fort is a 12th and 13th-century Kakatiya era monument found in Warangal. Built by Ganapati Deva and completed by his daughter and successor Rudrama Devi, it consists of three concentric layers of fort walls and elaborate gateways per Hindu texts on fort architecture:
- The inner layer was made from granite, is 1.2 kilometers in diameter and has four gateways in the cardinal directions (north, east, south and west). This layer was completed last and by Rudrama Devi.
- The middle layer was made from mud and bricks, is 2.4 kilometers in diameter and also had four gateways in the cardinal directions. In the modern era, many more roads have been cut into the mud fort ramparts.
- The outer most layer is 12.5 kilometers in diameter and is not quite circular. It is the oldest and had many more entry and exit points.
- These layers of fort walls had 45 observation towers. Within them, according to vastu sastra texts, the Kakatiyas had built man made lakes, gardens, fountains and palaces. Within each layer of fort walls were public Hindu and Jain temples with toranas, as well as secular mandapas, some of which have survived and others ruined. These temple parts are now found scattered near temples all over the city, with a major collection displayed as ruins in Fort Warangal Park and open air museum.
