English: Whaling has been prevalent in Japan since the 12th century. Due to a moratorium on commercial whaling by the International Whaling Commission, Japanese whaling is currently restricted to hunts conducted by the Institute of Cetacean Research. Nevertheless it is a source of political dispute between pro- and anti-whaling countries and organizations, since environmental groups regard the Japanese research programme as a cover for commercial whaling.
