William Harrison Hays, Sr. (1879 – 1954), namesake of the Hays Code for censorship of American films, was chairman of the Republican National Committee (1918–21), U.S. Postmaster General (1921–22), and first president of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA) (later renamed the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)) (1922–45).
