English: The Zohar ("Splendour/Radiance"), a large compendium of mystical commentary on the Torah, is the central foundational text of Kabbalah in Judaism. It was disseminated by the Spanish Kabbalist Moses de Leon in the late 13th century, but describes teachings of the 2nd century Talmudic sage Simeon bar Yochai in Judea. Traditional Kabbalists follow its early origin; contemporary academics follow the later writing, debating possible earlier traditions or sources. The Zohar exerted a historical hold on Jewish imagination.
