Deutsch: Zürich ist die grösste Stadt der Schweiz und Hauptstadt des Kantons Zürich. Die Kernstadt zählt rund 400'000 Einwohner; in der Agglomeration leben 1,3 Millionen Menschen, und die Metropolitanregion hat 1,83 Millionen Einwohner. Zürich liegt im östlichen Schweizer Mittelland, an der Limmat respektive der Sihl, in einem von Hügeln umschlossenen Becken am unteren (nördlichen) Ende des Zürichsees. Noch heute ist die westliche Abgrenzung der mittelalterlichen Kernstadt um den Lindenhof anhand des Schanzengrabens gut zu erkennen. Das Limmattal bildet den wichtigsten Natur- und Siedlungsraum von Zürich, auf seiner Westseite von den bewaldeten Höhen der Albiskette mit dem Uetliberg flankiert. Nach Süden reicht das Gemeindegebiet in das untere Sihltal. Nordöstlich an das Limmattal schliesst die Kette mehrheitlich bewaldeter und als Naherholungsgebiet genutzten Hügel – Hönggerberg, Käferberg, Adlisberg und Zürichberg – an, welche die Wasserscheide zwischen der Limmat und der Glatt markieren. Auch ein Teil des Katzensees (Naturschutzgebiet) gehört zum Stadtgebiet, und bedeutende Grünanlagen befinden sich entlang des Seeufers. Grössere landwirtschaftlich genutzte Flächen liegen im Bereich der Stadtquartiere Affoltern und Seebach. Der nördlichste Gemeindeteil erstreckt sich in die Ebene des Glattals und in die Senke, welche die Verbindung zwischen dem Glattal und dem Furttal herstellt. Heute setzt sich Stadt Zürich aus 12 Stadtkreisen zusammen, die von 1 bis 12 durchnummeriert werden und jeweils zwei bis vier Quartiere umfassen. Nachbargemeinden von Zürich sind Regensdorf, Rümlang, Opfikon und Wallisellen im Norden, Dübendorf, Fällanden und Maur im Osten, Zollikon, Kilchberg und Adliswil im Süden sowie Stallikon, Uitikon, Schlieren und Oberengstringen im Westen.

Zürich can be counted as one of the world’s pre-eminent global cities. According to several surveys from 2006 to 2009, Zürich was named the city with the best quality of life in the world as well as the wealthiest city in Europe. The Zürich metropolitan area has a population of about 1.83 million people.
