Merge proposal[edit]

Adda is ambiguous, so I suggest to move Category:Adda in Category:Adda River (the reverse of the current proposal). --Juiced lemon 09:06, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Good point. Personally, though, I dislike the form X River for rivers in Europe as it unnecessarily privileges North American English usage. (In British English we would normally write ‘the river Adda’, not the ‘the Adda River’). Category:Adda (river) won’t work because of the river in Wales. How about Category:Adda (Italy)? —Ian Spackman 11:01, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
This is an Italian River, so I don't care what Americans or Britons think about the name of this river in this international project. A convenient custom in Commons is to keep the name of the matching article in the English Wikipedia. As this name is currently Adda River, I think we should keep this category. Maybe there are other Adda homonyms in Italy. --Juiced lemon 15:32, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
It is precisely because this is an international project that we should try to avoid privileging particular variants of English in the coverage of non-English speaking countries.—Ian Spackman 01:00, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
I think using particular variants of English don't bother users from non-English countries (this can be checked with a survey). So, the debate concerns mainly users from English countries. My opinion is that:
  • the article names in the English encyclopedia results from former debate(s) between such users
  • there are more experts in linguistics in the English Wikipedia than in Wikimedia Commons
  • the purpose of the Commons project implies only minimum encyclopedic work
Therefore, it's generally fine to keep the name of an English Wikipedia article in Wikimedia Commons. --Juiced lemon 12:59, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
